Kuala Lumpur to Live Up City with Formula One Activities  [3/2/2004]

The Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix City 2004 programme officially takes off this Sunday (March 7) with racing fans expected to converge in Dataran Merdeka to enjoy the live telecast of the opening race of 2004 Formula One World Championship in Melbourne.

Organised for the first time, racing fans can catch all the excitement and thrills at Albert Park, which has traditionally been the Formula One season opener and had provided unexpected results being the first race of the year.

“We hope to see all racing fans at Dataran Merdeka this Sunday in their favourite team colours and show your support for the teams and your idols,” says Azhar Ghazali, Press Officer for the Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix 2004.

Promoted as The World Hottest Race, the Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix has again engaged Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Tourism Malaysia as their major partners. For the second consecutive year, Kuala Lumpur is being promoted internationally as the Formula One Grand Prix City.

“Consider the Australian Grand Prix as a warm up for our own Malaysian GP where we expect all racing fans to come to Sepang F1 Circuit and see the real battle live,” said Azhar, adding that the Sepang race will provide a clearer picture of the F1 teams’ capabilities and strength.

Unlike in Melbourne, the F1 teams and drivers will be better prepared for competition at the Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix after having cleared all their season opener jitters and having an actual competitive run to gauge the true capability of their machines.

Malaysia hosts Round 2 of the championship from March 19 to 21. After Sepang, the championship travels to 16 other circuits around the globe including to Bahrain and Shanghai for the first time.

On the same day on March 7, Lord Mayor of Kuala Lumpur Datuk Mohmad Shaid Mohd Taufek will also launch the Shopping in Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix City programme, which will be held at Star Hill Shopping Complex in Bukit Bintang at 3.30pm

Held in conjunction with the national Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival, shoppers will enjoy lucrative discounts on their shopping as the whole nation goes on sale for the whole of March.

Running up to the race, Kuala Lumpur City Hall had also sought the support of hotels, shopping complexes and entertainment outlets around the city to organise their F1 promotions within their premises.

“Formula One partners and sponsors are also expected to adopt certain prominent streets in the city and dressed them in the respective team colours to give that festive Formula One atmosphere,” added Azhar.

The festival gets hotter on the following weekend with racing-based activities being organised at Dataran Merdeka and around the city on March 13 and 14.

To be graced by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, more than 50 classic cars will be put on show at the Classic and Vintage Car Concourse on March 13 at Dataran Merdeka, which will also feature a one-day precision driving demonstration and tests on the same day.

Winners of the concourse will be paraded to Telawi 3, Bangsar where Sepang International Circuit and City Hall are jointly organising the ‘The World Hottest Street Carnival’ beginning from 8pm.

To be filled with fun and games and entertainment, the F1 street party in Bangsar will feature performances from Formula One Ambassador Ning Baizura, Zainal Abidin and Jason Lo.

On March 14, racing fans can catch a glimpse of what they can expect at the Formula One with a special street demonstration that will start at Dataran Merdeka. Fans will get to see the Formula Hayabusa and Porsche Carerra GT 3 machines blazing through the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

Come the Race Weekend, Kuala Lumpur City Hall will have the KL Grand Prix City weekend festival will kick off in Bukit Bintang. It will be an evening that will feature a mixture of modern entertainment and cultural performances plus plenty of F1-related fun and games, sale of motorsports merchandise and display of racing cars.
