KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 — The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) will file a notice of appeal against the Sessions Court’s decision to acquit and discharge blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, also known as Papagomo, of a sedition charge.
In a statement today, the AGC said the decision was made after examining the ruling of the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court sitting in the Klang Sessions Court today, which acquitted and discharged Wan Muhammad Azri, 43, at the close of the defence case for a charge under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 (Act 15).
“After examining the decision of the Sessions Court Judge, this department has decided to file a notice of appeal against the acquittal and discharge in the near future,” the AGC said in a statement today.
According to the AGC, the prosecution had previously appealed against a decision by the same court on September 3, 2025, which had acquitted and discharged the accused at the close of the prosecution’s case.
The AGC stated that the appeal against that decision was filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on September 4, 2025, before the court allowed the public prosecutor’s appeal on July 31 last year and ordered the accused to enter his defence after finding that the prosecution had successfully proven a prima facie case.
“The accused presented his defence by giving sworn testimony in the same Sessions Court. The accused, who was the sole defence witness, admitted to issuing seditious statements as charged and merely presented a defence in the form of a denial,” the AGC said in the statement.
Earlier, Judge Siti Aminah Ghazali acquitted and discharged Wan Muhammad Azri after finding that the defence had successfully raised reasonable doubt at the close of the defence case.
On January 8, 2024, the man pleaded not guilty to a charge of uttering seditious remarks linking the government to being pro-Israel and pro-West via Facebook.
He was allegedly accused of making the statement on the Facebook page of Halid Hamidi (Halid Mat Kool), which was later viewed by an individual at a condominium unit in Jalan Tong Shin, Bukit Bintang here at 1pm on November 8, 2023.
The charge was framed under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a maximum penalty of three years in imprisonment or a fine of RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. — Bernama
