KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — Tickets for local films and theatre performances in the Federal Territories will be fully exempt from entertainment duty starting in 2027, as part of the government’s efforts to support the local creative industry.

The government will allocate more than RM130 million to support the film, music and creative content sectors, aimed at enhancing Malaysia’s image, creating jobs and bringing local stories to the international stage, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim while tabling Budget 2027 at the Dewan Rakyat today.

This includes incentives for local and international film and animation productions that shoot in Malaysia, as well as additional incentives for works that showcase Malaysian culture and national identity.

The government will also strengthen the local animation ecosystem to develop 20 new intellectual properties (IPs) and commercialise Malaysian characters globally.

The government also called on state administrations to introduce similar entertainment duty exemptions to support local creative practitioners.
