KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into five individuals suspected of spreading false information on the social media platform Threads about an impending fuel price hike.

In a statement today, the commission confirmed that three of the five suspects have already been called in to have their statements recorded to assist with the probe.

The viral content, which falsely claimed that petrol and diesel prices would increase, was deemed misleading and capable of causing public anxiety.

MCMC noted that the misinformation had been edited to mimic the visual identity of television broadcaster Buletin TV3.

“Upon further verification, Buletin TV3 issued a denial regarding the publication of content that had been edited using their visual identity.

“Following this, MCMC also received a complaint from Buletin TV3 stating that the viral false content did not originate from them and was the work of a third party,” the commission said.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities.

If convicted, offenders face a maximum fine of RM500,000, a prison sentence of up to two years, or both.

MCMC als issued a reminder against the misuse of social media to mislead the public, stating that firm action will be taken against anyone found violating the law.

The public is advised to verify information before sharing and to refrain from spreading content that could disrupt public order.
