KUALA NERUS, 3 April — A new Opposition Leader will be finalised before the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes in June, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said today.
While a candidate has yet to be chosen, the Marang MP said that the decision would only be reached after exhaustive discussions involving all opposition parties to ensure a unified front, Bernama reported.
Hadi noted that there is no immediate rush, as the next parliamentary sitting is months away, asserting that the coalition’s current priorities are focused on internal party matters and broader issues within Perikatan Nasional (PN).
“This matter requires consensus because it involves all opposition MPs, not just a single party,” Hadi told reporters at an event here today.
“We will take into account the views of all political parties and opposition lawmakers, including those from Sabah and Sarawak. The final candidate must receive the unanimous approval of all component parties.”
The search for a new leader follows the political uncertainty surrounding the current Opposition leader, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who has remained in the role despite his sacking from Bersatu in February.
Under parliamentary convention, the Opposition leader is typically the head of the largest opposition bloc.
