KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 — Malaysia and Japan have the potential to expand defence industry cooperation through technology transfer, local component development and participation in global supply chains, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said.

The matter was discussed during a meeting with Japan’s Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA), led by its Commissioner Manabu Imakyurei, he added.

“I received a briefing on Japan’s approach to developing its defence industry, while exchanging views on potential cooperation in technology transfer, local component development and global supply chains.

“I believe closer ties based on trust and mutual respect will open up more opportunities for defence cooperation that benefit both countries,” he posted on X, explaining that ATLA was an agency under Japan’s Ministry of Defence responsible for defence procurement, technology and logistics.

He began a four-day official working visit to Japan yesterday, aimed at expanding defence cooperation and strengthening mutual understanding in addressing regional security challenges.

The visit, which is grounded in the Malaysia-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, is also expected to further strengthen relations between the two countries. — Bernama
