KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — The Malaysian Parliament’s Palestine Caucus will submit a proposed motion on the genocide in Gaza to the Office of the Dewan Rakyat Speaker and seek to have it scheduled for debate during next week’s parliamentary sitting.
Its chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said the proposed motion would include calls for a lasting ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and safe, sustained and unhindered access to humanitarian aid.
“Rejecting the forced displacement of Palestinians and affirming their right to self-determination, while supporting the processes of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) within their respective jurisdictions, as well as respecting relevant international judicial decisions and orders,” he said.
Syed Ibrahim, who is also Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, said this at a press conference held in conjunction with the Three-Year Commemoration of the Gaza Genocide at the Parliament building here today.
The Ledang Member of Parliament also said the motion would call for efforts to strengthen diplomatic action, including scrutiny of military assistance and arms transfers that risk facilitating violations of international law.
“In addition, to establish a coordinated Malaysian framework for the recovery of Gaza, prioritising healthcare, education, child rehabilitation and Palestinian-led reconstruction,” he said.
In this regard, Syed Ibrahim said the Caucus called for sufficient time to be allocated to allow for substantive debate and the participation of Members of Parliament from across the political divide.
“To ensure the success of this initiative, the Caucus calls for coordinated engagement with the government as well as government and opposition MPs to finalise the motion and facilitate its tabling and scheduling in accordance with the Standing Orders in force,” he said.
Meanwhile, he also called on the public to participate in the Three-Year Commemoration of the Gaza Genocide gathering from 2pm to 5pm this Friday, which will begin at Menara Tabung Haji before proceeding to the United States Embassy. — Bernama
