GEORGE TOWN, Oct 17 — A total of 202.3 hectares of land have been reclaimed at Silicon Island since reclamation works began in September 2023, marking progress in the development of Penang’s next economic growth hub as of October 2026.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the development was envisioned to complement the state’s semiconductor industry while attracting investments in advanced technology, research and development, and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven innovation.
“The early launch of the Silicon Island Experience Centre offers visitors a closer look at our vision for a new growth hub that will complement Penang’s semiconductor industry and attract investments in advanced technology, research and development, and AI-driven innovation,” he said in a Facebook post today.
He said Silicon Island was also expected to create quality jobs, develop local talent and benefit surrounding communities, with sustainability remaining a key priority.
Chow said the state government hoped that, with the right support and strategic partnerships, it could take Penang’s economy to the next level and build a stronger, greener future for generations to come.
In a separate statement, Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd said the Silicon Island Experience Centre was now open to government agencies, investors, local communities and strategic partners to help them better understand the 931-hectare development.
It said the 2,500-square-foot facility featured an interactive LED scale model showcasing key components of the development, including a 283-hectare Green Tech Park, commercial precincts, transit corridors and more than 110 kilometres of dedicated cycling and pedestrian paths.
Built at a cost of RM2.5 million, the centre was completed in four months.
Silicon Island is designed as a smart city with a five-diamond Low Carbon City accreditation, with its development expected to support Penang’s long-term economic growth while incorporating sustainable urban planning.
Penang Infrastructure Corporation Sdn Bhd chief executive officer and Silicon Island Development chairman Datuk Seri Farizan Darus said reclamation works began in September 2023, with 202.3 hectares of land physically reclaimed as of October 2026.
“Physical progress on the RM420 million Pan Island Link 2A contract is also moving smoothly.
“We are targeting the opening of the first section of the marine bridge connecting Jalan Permatang Damar Laut directly to Silicon Island by December 2028, leading towards full completion by June 2029,” he said. — Bernama
