SANDAKAN, Sept 26 — Road users are calling for urgent repairs to a badly damaged stretch of road along Batu 32 here, opposite the Road Transport Department (JPJ) checkpoint, following years of what they described as neglect.
Resident Mohd Hakimi raised concern over the condition of the road, describing it as a lifeline for the local community that had been left without comprehensive repairs despite its deteriorating state.
His concern intensified after he witnessed a vehicle stranded by the roadside after being disabled by the severely damaged road surface.
He said the incident highlighted the danger faced by motorists and other road users who depend on the route daily.
According to Mohd Hakimi, breakdowns caused by deep potholes, including blown tyres and damaged rims, had become increasingly common among residents using the road.
He said the deteriorating condition was not only a safety hazard but also placed an additional financial burden on vehicle owners, who had to bear repair and maintenance costs.
Mohd Hakimi questioned why basic infrastructure such as safe and properly maintained roads remained an unresolved issue despite the country having been independent for decades.
He also questioned the level of monitoring by the authorities, particularly as the damaged stretch is located near a JPJ enforcement facility.
He called on the local authority, Public Works Department (JKR) and road maintenance concessionaires to visit the site and see for themselves the difficulties faced by road users.
Mohd Hakimi said patchwork repairs were no longer sufficient, as such repairs often deteriorated again within a short period, particularly during the rainy season.
Instead, he called for comprehensive and quality resurfacing works to ensure the road remained durable in the long term.
He warned that apart from causing damage to vehicles, the poor road condition could also contribute to serious or fatal accidents, particularly involving motorcyclists and motorists travelling at night when visibility is reduced.
Residents are now hoping the relevant authorities and elected representatives will give serious attention to the matter and implement a permanent solution before the situation results in a serious accident or loss of life. — Daily Express
