Sarawak to set up authority to manage and develop lakes, says Abang Johari

KUCHING, Sept 26 — Sarawak will establish an authority to oversee, manage and develop the state’s lake areas in a comprehensive manner.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the initiative is part of the state’s development plans for the next five years.

He said the plans took into account approaches adopted by other states to develop lake areas as resort destinations while providing better facilities.

“Insya-Allah, we will establish an authority to oversee all our lakes in Sarawak, including rivers with potential,” he said at the launch of the Sarawakku Sayang 2026 programme in Betong today.

Abang Johari said the initiative was also expected to add value to the state’s economic growth while further strengthening Sarawak’s existing strengths.

Meanwhile, he said the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) would establish a Flying School Academy in Betong to support the state’s efforts to advance modern agriculture through drone technology.

“Drones are important, in addition to aircraft, which is why I support the establishment of a flying academy here in collaboration with the private sector.

“This is because licences are required, while the open airspace here provides a conducive environment for students to learn how to operate drones in the Betong area,” he said. — Bernama
