BANTING, Oct 11 — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, today officiated the renaming of Dataran Morib to Dataran Dato’ Seri Harun Idris at Pantai Morib here.

Also present was the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, while Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari accompanied the Sultan during the ceremony.

The renaming honours the late Datuk Seri Harun Idris, the eighth Selangor Menteri Besar, in recognition of his contributions to the state. He also served as the Morib state assemblyman.

In a statement, Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) said the square officially reopened to the public today following the completion of the RM60.50 million Morib Beach Conservation Project on July 1.

The federal government project was implemented by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) in collaboration with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS).

According to MPKL, the project was undertaken following a high-tide incident on September 18, 2020, which caused a retaining wall to collapse and damaged the coastal area.

The conservation works included beach nourishment along a 750-metre stretch, construction of a 750-metre seawall, two offshore breakwaters and two beacon lights.

Meanwhile, the Selangor government has allocated RM55 million under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) for three coastal conservation projects in Kuala Langat.

Of this amount, RM15 million is allocated for erosion-control structures and beach nourishment at Pantai Kampung Endah (Istana Bahagia).

Another RM20 million will fund erosion-control structures and upgrading of the coastal bund at Pantai Batu Laut, while RM20 million has been allocated for erosion-control structures and beach nourishment at Pantai Tumbuk.

MPKL said the square had also undergone upgrades to its facilities and infrastructure, with the improvements expected to attract more domestic and international tourists. — Bernama
