KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said he will hold a meeting tonight with Negeri Sembilan assemblymen from Barisan Nasional (BN), PAS and Parti Wawasan Negara tonight in a fresh attempt to resolve the state’s ongoing constitutional crisis.
The meeting at Menara Dato’ Onn here will focus on coordinating the parties and identifying possible solutions in line with the state Constitution and customs, national news agency Bernama reported this afternoon.
“The meeting is for me to coordinate, with no intention of interfering, but to find the best solution to the crisis currently faced by Negeri Sembilan,” Zahid was quoted as telling reporters after officiating the 18th Malaysian Makkal Sakti Party General Assembly here yesterday.
Zahid, who is BN chairman, said any solution must put the interests of the people first while respecting the state’s laws, Constitution and customs.
He also gave Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim full mandate to seek a way forward, including seeking an audience with the Yang Dipertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, the four Undangs and Tunku Besar Tampin.
Zahid was also asked about the possibility of declaring a political emergency in Negeri Sembilan.
“I do not think we should move towards that because there has been no disturbance to peace in Negeri Sembilan, and there is no need to even consider such a thing… there must surely be better options,” he was quoted as saying.
The latest move comes amid a widening dispute between the state government and palace over the authority to revoke the appointments of the 10 state executive council members.
Tuanku Muhriz revoked the appointments effective Sept 20 after the palace said the exco members had breached their oaths of office, while Ismail has disputed the validity of the move.
The Attorney-General has said the revocation was valid under the Negeri Sembilan Constitution, while the former exco members have since been barred from entering their offices.
