KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 — A 30-year-old cook has been arrested for allegedly inciting a crowd to breach security barriers to secure seats during the National Day 2026 celebrations at Dataran Putrajaya.

The suspect was detained in Putrajaya yesterday afternoon after five police reports were lodged against him for instigating members of the public to push through the gates early on Aug 31, NST reported.

The resulting surge caused a chaotic crush near the perimeter barriers, leaving several spectators injured after being knocked to the ground.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed the arrest, adding that investigators will apply for a remand order against the suspect today.

“Yes, we have arrested the man in the orange shirt for further investigation under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955,” he said today.

The arrest came after a two-minute-and-18-second video clip went viral on Facebook, showing an individual in an orange and brown shirt aggressively agitating the crowd waiting at the seating entrance at around 5am, triggering the barrier breach.

Fadil urged members of the public with information or video footage of the incident to step forward to assist investigators, requesting those involved to report to the Putrajaya district police headquarters.
