KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated actor-turned-politician Vijay on his election as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, India, describing the outcome as a significant moment for the state.

In a Facebook post today, Anwar said Vijay, long known for his film roles, has now been entrusted with a responsibility that goes beyond the screen.

“For many years, his admirers watched him defeat corrupt politicians and various villains within a few hours on screen. Now the people of Tamil Nadu have given him a much greater responsibility in real life,” he said.

Anwar referred to the slogan “Oru Viral Puratchi”, or “one-finger revolution”, saying it symbolised a movement that had now reached a historic turning point.

He also highlighted the long-standing ties between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu, noting deep historical, cultural and people-to-people links between the two regions.

Anwar said he looked forward to working closely with Vijay in his new role as chief minister.
