PETALING JAYA, Nov 4 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government had previously stepped in to rescue the publisher of Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo! when the company faced operational difficulties.

As such, he said questions over the latest move to place about 100 employees on paid leave should be directed to Media Mulia Sdn Bhd, the publisher of both newspapers.

“We have rescued it once before,” he told reporters after attending the 2026 World Town Planning Day celebration and the launch of the Fifth National Physical Plan (RFN5) and Third National Urbanisation Policy (DPN3) here today.

Anwar said this when asked whether the company’s rationalisation exercise was justified and whether the affected employees would receive compensation.

On Nov 2, Media Mulia director and chief financial officer Abd Wahid Idris announced that about 100 employees would be placed under a Paid Leave Programme as part of the company’s rationalisation exercise.

He said the company was reviewing its business model, operational structure and strategic direction to ensure its long-term viability amid challenges facing the media industry. — Bernama
