KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today defended Malaysia’s adherence to the One-China policy following criticism from Taiwanese lawmakers over his recent remarks on Taiwan.
This came after comments he made in a recent Al Jazeera interview, in which he acknowledged Taiwan as part of China.
Speaking to local media, Anwar stood by his remarks, saying Malaysia had upheld the One-China policy since the time of the country’s second prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, and would continue to do so.
“The One China policy has been practised since Tun Abdul Razak’s time.
“In my view, the policy remains and we will continue to uphold it.
“Of course, we want to seek a peaceful path whenever possible,” he said.
Anwar said Malaysia’s position was not new, adding that the policy had also been accepted by the United Nations.
He also defended his position on territorial integrity, drawing a comparison with the United States and its stance during the American War of Independence to prevent its own territories from breaking away.
At the same time, Anwar stressed that Malaysia respected China’s position while maintaining that a peaceful resolution was the best course.
“Of course, we respect China’s position, but a peaceful path is best. That is what is being pursued now,” he said.
Anwar also attributed the negative reactions to how the issue was framed during the Al Jazeera interview.
“Maybe it’s the way Al Jazeera frames the issue that might have prompted the negative reactions,” he said.
