BANGKOK, July 13 — At least 27 people were killed and 63 others injured after a fire broke out at a restaurant with live music in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district shortly after midnight today.

The fire began at the Na Ladprao premises near Soi Lat Phrao 1 at about 12.02am while a large number of customers were inside, the Bangkok Post reported, citing Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes.

The dead reportedly comprised nine men and 18 women, while 22 of the injured were reported to be in serious condition.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said most of the victims were believed to have died from smoke inhalation.

He said musicians at the restaurant reported seeing the fire begin at a circuit breaker near the stage, before the electricity went out and an explosion was heard.

Bangkok disaster prevention and mitigation director Suriyachai Rawiwan said some victims appeared to have fled towards toilets at the rear of the premises, an area that rescuers had difficulty reaching.

He said the venue had emergency exits at the back.

Anutin, who is also interior minister, said the restaurant was licensed to host musical performances and had been inspected by the relevant authorities in April.

Authorities are continuing to identify the victims.
