JOHOR BAHRU, June 11 — A 200-litre industrial tank containing a chemical known as ‘Spent Inorganic Acid’ (SW206) leaked at a factory in Jalan Keluli, Pasir Gudang, this morning.

Senior operations commander Deputy Fire Superintendent II Firdaus Ahmad said the department received an emergency call at 11.59 am and a Fire Rescue Tender with six personnel from the Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene.

He said the Operations Response Team (PKO) carried out the operation together with the Department of Environment and monitored the situation at the location.

“The chemical residue was subsequently transferred into a scrubber system by the factory for containment and we have requested assistance from the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Special Team for further action,” he said in a statement today.

He added that no injuries were reported and the operation is still ongoing.

Earlier, photos and videos of the incident went viral, urging the public, especially nearby residents, to take precautionary measures. — Bernama
