Bursa Malaysia ends higher on banking and plantation gains

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Bursa Malaysia ended higher today, supported by renewed buying interest in banking and plantation counters.

At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 4.48 points, or 0.27 per cent, to 1,683.53 from Friday’s close of 1,679.05.

The benchmark index opened 3.35 points higher at 1,682.40 and moved between 1,678.37 and 1,685.49 throughout the session.

The market breadth was negative, with losers outpacing gainers 620 to 403, while 545 counters were unchanged, 1,082 untraded, and 10 suspended.

Turnover decreased to 2.68 billion units valued at RM1.69 billion from 2.79 billion units valued at RM1.93 billion last Friday.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said domestic sentiment turned slightly more positive following the easing of geopolitical tensions and the decline in crude oil prices, which could help alleviate inflationary pressures and support the broader economic outlook.

“The recent rebound also suggests that bargain-hunting interest remains intact, particularly in fundamentally sound blue-chip stocks,” he told Bernama.

Among the heavyweights, Maybank put on 14 sen to RM10.94, Public Bank and Tenaga Nasional gained two sen each to RM4.91 and RM14.30, respectively, CIMB Group rose one sen to RM7.61, IHH Healthcare jumped 18 sen to RM8.33, and SD Guthrie increased 11 sen to RM6.15.

On the most active list, HHRG ticked up one sen to nine sen, ECKEM Holdings gained 1.5 sen to 13.5 sen, Tanco perked up one sen to 18.5 sen, while Silver Ridge slipped 2.5 sen to 18.5 sen, and Zetrix AI slid three sen to 76 sen.

As for the top gainers, United Plantations garnered 38 sen to RM33.50, Petronas Dagangan added 28 sen to RM19.54, Bintulu Port soared 21 sen to RM5.56, Hong Leong Financial climbed 18 sen to RM18.68, and Hong Leong Industries increased 14 sen to RM18.82.

For top decliners, Malaysian Pacific Industries dipped RM1.96 to RM45.82, Batu Kawan declined 46 sen to RM21.18, Nestle shed 44 sen to RM90.76, Kelington Group lost 20 sen to RM7.80, and Panasonic Manufacturing erased 19 sen to RM5.70.

On the index board, the FBM Emas Index rose 15.71 points to 12,472.72 and the FBMT 100 Index gained 18.34 points to 12,301.64.

The FBM Emas Shariah Index decreased 4.61 points to 12,287.62, the FBM 70 Index declined 34.71 points to 17,805.64, and the FBM ACE Index eased 1.74 points to 4,892.87.

Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index advanced 102.45 points to 19,934.42 and the Plantation Index improved 38.25 points to 9,007.79, and the Energy Index notched up 0.89 of a point to 759.49, while the Industrial Products and Services Index slid 1.08 points to 181.36.

The Main Market volume narrowed to 1.06 billion units valued at RM1.36 billion compared with 1.32 billion units valued at RM1.65 billion last Friday.

Warrants turnover expanded to 1.04 billion units worth RM141.68 million versus 854.95 million units worth RM106.34 million previously.

The ACE Market volume dropped to 571.10 million units valued at RM193.68 million from 612.79 million units valued at RM170.56 million on Friday.

Consumer products and services counters accounted for 149.74 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products and services (204.98 million), construction (74.31 million), technology (181.66 million), financial services (33.72 million), property (214.51 million), plantation (14.78 million), real estate investment trusts (10.46 million), closed-end fund (99,200), energy (59.29 million), healthcare (32.10 million), telecommunications and media (15.82 million), transportation and logistics (45.42 million), utilities (32.81 million), and business trusts (172,500). — Bernama
