KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — Bursa Malaysia opened higher today, in line with the positive performance in some regional markets.

At 9.10 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 6.28 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 1,714.38 from Friday’s close of 1,708.10.

The benchmark index opened 1.60 points higher at 1,709.70.

Market breadth was positive, with gainers outnumbering losers 229 to 187. A total of 360 counters were unchanged, 2,012 untraded and 25 suspended.

Turnover stood at 285.58 million shares worth RM108.52 million.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said that despite the better performance, the benchmark index could continue to consolidate following the weaker Wall Street last Friday.

He said Wall Street ended lower as United States (US) job data came in stronger than anticipated, raising the possibility that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) could increase rates at the next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in mid-September.

As a result, the US 10-year Treasury yield inched higher to 4.784 per cent, Thong said.

Over in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index surged above the 25,600 level on optimism that the Fed may keep rates steady for now, he said.

The rally was mainly led by heightened buying interest in technology-related stocks, he said.

On the home front, Thong said the FBM KLCI weakened to below the 1,710 mark as selling persisted amongst the foreign funds. For the week, net foreign outflows amounted to RM870 million.

“In view of this, we expect the FBM KLCI to hover within the 1,700-1,715 range today,” he told Bernama.
