KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — A Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) Tawau air traffic officer died after the Yamaha RXZ he was riding is believed to have skidded and ended up underneath a Toyota Camry at Batu 3, Jalan Apas, in Tawau, Sabah, yesterday.
The 55-year-old local man sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after the 6pm incident, Berita Harian reported.
Tawau district police chief Assistant Commissioner Rosdi Mat Jusoh said preliminary investigations found that both vehicles were travelling in the same direction when the incident occurred.
He said the 28-year-old local man driving the Toyota Camry was travelling from Kampung Titingan towards Batu Payung, while the victim was riding his motorcycle from Tawau town towards Taman Millenium.
“When the Toyota Camry continued moving after the traffic lights at the Batu Hijau junction, the victim’s motorcycle was on the right side of the car and is believed to have lost its balance.
“This was due to the uneven road surface,” he said in a statement today.
Rosdi said an initial inspection at the scene found that the right lane had recently been resurfaced and was at a higher level than the left lane, which had yet to be resurfaced.
“The condition is believed to have caused the victim to lose his balance before falling in front of the Toyota Camry.
“The car driver was unable to brake in time, causing the victim and his motorcycle to become lodged underneath the front of the vehicle,” he said.
The Toyota Camry driver was unhurt, while the victim’s body was taken to Tawau Hospital for a post-mortem.
