JOHOR BAHRU, May 17 — The federal government has approved the long-awaited rapid transit project aimed at alleviating chronic traffic congestion here, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today.
Speaking at the Pakatan Harapan Convention, Loke addressed criticism over the project’s timeline, explaining that the substantial cost required careful deliberation, The Star reported.
“The Cabinet has just approved the RM10 billion project. Some have said we are slow, but of course, we need time to review it. The amount involved is not small,” he said.
Loke added that the transit project is crucial to support the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2027.
He also gave his assurance that interim traffic management plans are being developed to cope with congestion until the new system is fully implemented.
The approval comes after repeated calls for action from the Johor state government to expedite matters, over concerns that the project could lag significantly behind the RTS Link.
