IPOH, July 5 — Police arrested a woman and her two children for allegedly cheating a senior citizen of jewellery worth RM8,000 by offering a bogus welfare aid package at a hospital in Teluk Intan on June 29.

Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the suspects, aged 22 to 50, were detained during a raid at an apartment in Semenyih, Selangor, on July 3.

“The 67-year-old victim was at the hospital for a medical check-up when a woman who introduced herself as a welfare officer approached her. The suspect offered RM2,000 monthly community welfare assistance.

“The victim then handed over a gold necklace, a pair of gold earrings with a short chain, and three gold rings before realising she had been duped when the suspect failed to return,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Alwi said police seized clothing believed worn by the suspects during the incident and recovered the victim’s jewellery, which had been sold to a pawnshop in Teluk Intan.

“All suspects have been remanded for four days from July 4 to July 7 to assist investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,” he said.

Mohd Alwi advised the public not to trust individuals offering welfare assistance who, in return, ask for jewellery or cash. — Bernama
