KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The value of work done in the construction sector rose by 8.8 per cent year-on-year to RM47.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026 (2Q 2026), maintaining a steady momentum following an 8.5 per cent increase in 1Q 2026, according to the Department of Statistics, Malaysia (DOSM).
In a statement today, DOSM said performance was mainly driven by continued expansion in the special trade activities and non-residential building sub-sectors, which recorded double-digit growth of 17.6 per cent and 13.3 per cent, respectively.
It said the residential building sub-sector registered an 8.7 per cent rise, followed by the civil engineering sub-sector with a 2.7 per cent growth.
DOSM said the civil engineering sub-sector contributed RM16.7 billion, or 35 per cent of the total work value done in the quarter. The performance was driven by the construction of utility projects (RM8.1 billion) and roads and railways (RM6.9 billion).
Meanwhile, the value of work done for the non-residential and residential building sub-sectors was RM14 billion (29.3 per cent share) and RM10.9 billion (22.8 per cent share), respectively.
It said the special trade activity sub-sector contributed RM6.2 billion (12.9 per cent), supported by site preparation (RM1.5 billion), plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation (RM1.3 billion) and electrical installation (RM1.3 billion).
DOSM said the private sector remained the primary growth driver for the quarter, contributing RM31.4 billion, or 65.8 per cent of the total value of work done.
“The private sector sustained its double-digit growth momentum, registering 11.4 per cent growth (1Q 2026: 13.2 per cent), driven by strong performance in the special trade activity (20.2 per cent) and non-residential building (18.2 per cent) sub-sectors.
“Meanwhile, the value of work done by the public sector rose by 4.1 per cent (1Q 2026: 0.5 per cent) to RM16.4 billion, accounting for 34.2 per cent of the total value, supported by the special trade activity sub-sector (11 per cent),” it added.
On a state-level basis, nearly 65.8 per cent of the value of work done was concentrated in Selangor, Johor, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, and Sarawak, DOSM said.
“Selangor’s work value was RM12.2 billion or 25.5 per cent, with the non-residential building (RM4.8 billion) and residential building (RM3.2 billion) sub-sectors contributing the most.
Johor took second place with RM9.4 billion or 19.6 per cent, primarily supported by the non-residential building sub-sector (RM3.5 billion), while the Federal Territories’ work value was RM5.2 billion (10.8 per cent), and Sarawak recorded RM4.7 billion (9.9 per cent), it said.
It said for the first half of 2026 (1H 2026), the value of work done in the construction sector reached RM94.3 billion, an 8.7 per cent rise versus a year ago.
“Growth was moderate against the 14.7 per cent in 1H 2025, with performance supported by positive growth across all sub-sectors, particularly in special trade activities (21 per cent) and non-residential buildings (13 per cent),” it said. — Bernama
