SIK, June 29 — A husband and wife from Padang Besar were rushed to hospital after suffering severe food‑poisoning symptoms believed to be caused by eating wild mushrooms picked near a cattle shed at their home.

Berita Harian reported that the couple, Muhd Basir Abidudin Abd Razak and Intan Nabila Mazelam, both 28, reportedly cooked the mushrooms for lunch before collapsing hours later. According to the Briged Sukarela Yayasan Jariah Malaysia (BSYJM), rescuers received an emergency call at about 4pm and found the pair in a bathroom, weak, vomiting and suffering from diarrhoea.

BSYJM chairman Mahadzir Abd Hamid said the situation was dire, with the house “covered in vomit and faeces” and both victims unable to stand. The rescue was challenging as each victim weighed more than 150kg, requiring six BSYJM members and villagers to lift them into two ambulances. They were taken to Hospital Daerah Sik for treatment.

Mahadzir said Intan Nabila had contacted her mother and brother‑in‑law earlier to check whether the mushrooms were safe to eat, but the family mistakenly believed they were edible. The mushrooms were later determined to be poisonous.

The couple’s condition has not yet been publicly disclosed, and authorities are reminding the public to avoid consuming wild mushrooms unless properly identified by experts.
