KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — City Hall (DBKL) has urged residents and delivery riders to treat public housing amenities with care, following a viral video showing an individual riding a motorcycle into a People’s Housing Project (PPR) lift.
The closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, which circulated widely across social media, sparked public outrage over safety hazards and property damage. Neither the identity of the rider nor the precise location of the building has been independently verified.
In a statement, DBKL did not call out the individual but addressed the broader habit of rolling motorcycles and electric scooters into residential elevators to expedite doorstep deliveries.
“DBKL understands the demands of a food delivery rider’s job and appreciates their role in making city life easier.
“But the convenience of earning a living should go hand in hand with the responsibility to respect the rules and look after shared facilities,” DBKL said.
City Hall stressed that functioning elevators are an essential lifeline for public housing (PA) and PPR residents, especially senior citizens, persons with disabilities (OKU), expectant mothers, and young families. It added that ongoing maintenance, repairs, and refurbishment works are carried out regularly to ensure passenger safety.
The authority noted that frequent breakdowns drain municipal resources and severely disrupt residents’ daily routines.
“Some damage can actually be avoided if every user is more responsible,” the statement said, questioning whether residents who frequently lament broken lifts consider the toll of careless usage.
DBKL reiterated that earning a living must not compromise civic regulations or communal infrastructure.
“DBKL can provide, maintain and improve facilities, but cooperation and concern from all parties are needed to keep them working in the long term,” it said, adding that safeguarding public amenities reflects the civic responsibility expected of urban dwellers.
