KOTA KINABALU, Aug 9 — Police said preliminary investigations indicate that a 66-year-old woman forgot to put her SUV in parking gear before it rolled forward and crashed into the glass doors of Kota Kinabalu International Airport’s (KKIA) departure hall on Friday.
Berita Harian reported Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Shahrudin Mat Husain as saying the woman had stopped in the airport’s second lane to pick up her child and was preparing to switch drivers when the incident occurred.
“Preliminary investigations found that the woman is believed to have forgotten to put the vehicle’s gear in ‘P’ while changing drivers. As she tried to get out, the SUV began moving slowly, causing her to panic before she accidentally stepped on the accelerator,” he said.
Shahrudin said the SUV then surged forward, struck another vehicle and crashed through the departure hall’s glass doors before hitting a building pillar.
The woman managed to get out of the SUV before the collision but suffered minor facial injuries from glass fragments and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital I for treatment.
No passengers or airport staff were injured in the incident.
Police are investigating the case under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 under the Road Transport Act 1987.
