Driver, teenage passenger killed after car crashes into tree in Rompin

KUANTAN, Sept 9 — Two people were killed and another injured after the car they were travelling in skidded and crashed into a tree at Km 134 of the Kuantan-Johor Bahru Road in Rompin last night. 

Rompin District Police Chief Supt Sharif Shai Sharif Mondoi said the driver, R. Vijay, 27, died while receiving treatment at Rompin Hospital, while rear-seat passenger P. Vijayan, 17, died at the scene.

He said another passenger, M. Tanush Kumar, 16, who was seated in the front of the vehicle, sustained bodily injuries.

“Preliminary investigations found that the three men were travelling from Rompin towards Kuantan when, upon reaching the location, the vehicle is believed to have lost control before skidding and crashing into a tree on the left roadside,” he said in a statement yesterday. 

Sharif Shai said preliminary investigations indicated that the accident was believed to have been caused by the driver’s negligence.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, while post-mortems on both deceased victims were scheduled for 9 am tomorrow at Rompin Hospital. — Bernama pic
