KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 — An e-hailing driver has claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to an attempted murder charge after allegedly dousing a 62-year-old woman in petrol and setting her ablaze in Kepong earlier this month.
Ang Kam Tong, 58, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Judge Surita Budin, FMT reported.
Ang is accused of attempting to murder Gan Siew Teen by dousing her with fuel and setting her on fire, inflicting severe injuries. The alleged attack took place at a betting outlet in Taman Pusat Kepong, Sentul, at around 7.51am on August 9.
The offence, framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum prison term of 20 years upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Shakila Shariff objected to bail, telling the court that Ang had attempted to evade arrest. She also urged the bench to consider the severity of the victim’s condition, noting that Gan sustained third-degree burns.
In pleading for bail, defence counsel Lee Keng Fatt argued that his client is presumed innocent until proven guilty. He told the court that Ang is unmarried, works as an e-hailing driver with no fixed income, and that his siblings were ready to post bail on his behalf.
Surita granted bail at RM15,000 with one surety and fixed September 25 for case mention.
