
SANDAKAN, Aug 19 — A total of 28 non-permanent stilt houses were destroyed in a fire at Kampung Nunuyan Laut, Nunuyan Laut Island, here early today.
The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre, in a statement, said no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.
“The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 3.50am and subsequently deployed the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station team, assisted by a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) boat, to the scene, located 18 kilometres away.
“The fire was brought under control at 5.45am, and the team’s swift action saved 162 nearby houses from being affected,” read the statement.
The journey to the scene involved a six-kilometre land route from the Sandakan Fire Station to the Maritime Jetty, followed by a 12-kilometre journey by an MMEA boat. — Bernama
