Five men remanded another week over murder of Batu Pahat businessman found in fishing net

BATU PAHAT, Aug 10 — Five men, who are being investigated in connection with the murder of a businessman here, have been remanded for another week.

Magistrate Aimi Nawwar Mohamad Othman granted the remand extension for all the suspects, aged between 26 and 40, at the Magistrate’s Court here today until Monday.

Their remand is to assist investigators who are probing the murder of a 39-year-old businessman whose bound body was found floating in Sungai Tanjung Sembrong in Parit Raja here last week.

The five suspects were previously in police custody and were remanded for seven days to assist investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Their initial remand application ended today.

On August 3, the body of the businessman was found floating along the river by members of the public.

The body was tied up and bound in a fishing net.

Initial investigations revealed that the victim was believed to have been killed by strangulation with a rope around his neck before both of his hands were tied with tape.

Police believe that the victim’s body was tied in a fishing net with five rocks before being thrown into the river.

Investigators believe that the rocks were used to submerge the deceased’s remains to prevent them from rising to the surface.

The victim was a businessman from Mutiara Rini in Iskandar Puteri and had been reported missing since July 29.

He was identified by his next of kin based on his clothing and personal belongings.

Of the five men arrested, two had prior records related to crime and narcotics.
