KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Four police corporals pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today to a charge of extorting RM10,000 from a salesman three years ago.

Mohd Al Hafis Sairudin, 43, Mohd Azmi Mohd Ghozali, 40, Muhamad Azlan Zakaria, 39, and Muhammad Hanif Abdul Talib, 30, were jointly charged with extorting Danny Goh Ngee Guan, 35, by allegedly causing him to fear that he would be fined at least RM50,000 by the court.

The alleged act prompted the salesman to hand over RM10,000 at an apartment in Jalan Kepong, Sentul at 12pm on December 23, 2023.

The charge, under Section 384 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Act, carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, or a fine, or whipping, or any two of these punishments upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa did not offer bail as the offence is non-bailable, while lawyer Ahmad Ikram Ab Halim, representing all the accused, applied for minimum bail on the grounds that his clients were the sole breadwinners of their families and had fully cooperated during investigations.

Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan allowed bail of RM8,000 for each accused with two sureties, with additional conditions requiring them to report monthly at the nearest police station and not to disturb witnesses or the victim until the case is concluded.

The court fixed July 8 for mention. — Bernama
