KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Hainan is emerging as a key gateway between China and the global economy as it accelerates the development of its Free Trade Port (FTP), with new opportunities spanning supply chains, digital trade, investment, tourism and education.

These developments are explored in Bernama TV’s upcoming special documentary, “2026: Towards The Hainan Free Trade Port”, which offers an in-depth look at how Hainan is reshaping its economic landscape and strengthening its links with regional and international markets.

The rapid transformation taking place across the 35,000-square-kilometre island includes the expansion of Yangpu Port, one of Hainan’s key international gateways, which currently operates three main shipping routes connected to Malaysia, with direct calls at Port Klang and Pasir Gudang.

Hainan Harbor and Shipping Holding Co Ltd deputy general manager of production operation centre, Du Chengcai, said the port intends to further optimise its route network, increase sailing frequency and deepen cooperation with ports in Malaysia and across Asean.

“By elevating transshipment efficiency and service standards, we aim to help build a tighter China-Asean supply chain ecosystem,” he said.

The documentary also examines how preferential policies, including a 15 per cent corporate and personal income tax rate for eligible businesses and individuals, are supporting Hainan’s push to attract digital enterprises and international investment.

Beyond conventional trade, the documentary explores emerging opportunities in medical and marine tourism, international education and Hainan’s longstanding cultural ties with Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia.
