GEORGE TOWN, Aug 25 — Residents of Penang are urged to limit outdoor activities as air quality deteriorated today, with three of the state’s four monitoring stations breaching the unhealthy threshold.
State youth, sports and health committee chairman Daniel Gooi advised the public to wear face masks when outdoors to mitigate the effects of the poor air quality.
According to the Department of Environment’s Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), readings as of 11am showed unhealthy levels across most of the state.
On the island, the Minden and Balik Pulau stations recorded APIs of 155 and 151 respectively, while the Seberang Perai station on the mainland logged a reading of 146.
The only station remaining in the moderate category was Seberang Jaya, which recorded an API of 96.
Gooi urged the public to strictly adhere to the health ministry’s guidelines during this period. These protocols include reducing prolonged outdoor exposure, wearing face masks, and minimizing indoor air pollution, such as avoiding smoking.
The public is also advised to stay hydrated, wash their hands and face after being outdoors, and utilize the internal air circulation mode when using vehicle air conditioners.
Addressing the medical impact of the haze, Gooi noted that the state is on standby for an increase in health complications.
“So far there have not been report of acute respiratory cases due to the haze, but State Health Department have prepared for this,” he said.
He added that anyone experiencing respiratory distress should seek immediate treatment at public healthcare facilities.
