BANGKOK, June 30 — A man allegedly turned heartbreak into a trail of twisted metal after ploughing his newly registered Mercedes-Benz into eight vehicles moments after his partner ended their relationship, leaving two people injured in a dramatic crash that stunned motorists in Bangkok, according to Khaosod English.
The incident unfolded on Sriwara Road in Bangkok’s Wang Thonglang district yesterday evening, where a bronze-grey Mercedes-Benz bearing temporary red licence plates was caught on video repeatedly crashing into vehicles along the busy road.
Footage that quickly spread across social media showed the luxury car smashing into one vehicle after another, leaving a trail of wreckage.
Witnesses told Khaosod English the break-up appeared to trigger an emotional breakdown, with the driver allegedly taking out his frustration behind the wheel.
A 36-year-old motorcycle delivery rider who witnessed the incident said he first heard a series of loud crashes while waiting to collect a food delivery order.
He then watched as the Mercedes continued forward without slowing, hitting more vehicles before finally coming to a stop. Two occupants of one of the rear-ended cars suffered minor injuries.
When traffic police arrived, officers initially suspected the driver was intoxicated because of the nature of the crashes.
However, the rider said the man, believed to be in his 30s, climbed out of the Mercedes trembling and in tears. He told the witness he had just received a phone call from his partner ending their relationship, leaving him overwhelmed and unable to compose himself.
The rider said he tried to calm the visibly distressed driver and urged him not to let his personal problems hurt innocent people. The man reportedly agreed to compensate everyone affected before police escorted him to Wang Thonglang Police Station.
Police later impounded the heavily damaged Mercedes, whose crushed front end bore the brunt of the collisions. Several of the victims’ damaged vehicles were also taken to the station as part of the investigation.
Investigators said the driver admitted arguing with his partner before the relationship ended and confirmed he had lost emotional control.
Initial breath and drug screenings ruled out alcohol or illicit drugs as factors in the crash. Police also found no history of psychiatric treatment during preliminary background checks.
Authorities have charged the driver with reckless driving causing injury and property damage. Investigators are continuing to interview victims and witnesses while gathering additional evidence before proceeding with the case.
