KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered the Human Resources Ministry to review and report back to the Cabinet on the status of current applications from Malaysian doctors who want to return to work in the country.
Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the ministry was directed to examine several aspects related to applications that are under Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp).
“The review involves the status of applications received, the time taken to process applications and the number of applications approved and those that are rejected,” he said in the weekly post-cabinet media briefing that was broadcast live today.
“This also covers applications from doctors who want to return to Malaysia to serve”.
Fahmi, who is also the communications minister, said the decision to review was made following several concerns raised to the prime minister by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
He said the review was aimed at giving the Cabinet a clearer picture of TalentCorp’s handling of applications and the issues raised by the MMC.
TalentCorp is an agency under the Human Resources Ministry for the development and management of national talent, including efforts to attract and facilitate the return of Malaysian talent from abroad.
Of late, matters related to the return of Malaysian doctors from abroad have received attention following the country’s need for professionals in the health sector.
Last month, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad was reported as saying that the highest number of applications under TalentCorp’s Returning Expert Programme in the healthcare sector are from the United Kingdom, Singapore and Australia, while medical specialists and doctors make up the largest professional groups applying for the programme.
