Hulu Langat MP says demolition of Sungai Tekali Rohingya settlement underway, to be completed in two weeks

HULU LANGAT, June 13 — The demolition of settlement structures housing Rohingya citizens in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau, Tekali, here is expected to take two weeks, said Hulu Langat Member of Parliament Mohd Sany Hamzan.

He said the process began at the back of the area, involving structures built on government reserve land and a portion of private land.

However, he noted that the three-story building that went viral on social media will not be demolished for the time being because it was built entirely on private land.

“I have been informed that the landowner needs two weeks to demolish the single-story structures at the back, and not the building rumored to be a three-story flat or apartment that went viral previously,” he said when contacted today.

A survey by Bernama at the location found that the landowner had begun demolishing part of the building structures at the settlement starting at 9 am today, utilising two workers and an excavator.

The survey also found that the operation did not involve the three-story building that had gone viral on social media.

Meanwhile, a Rohingya citizen met at the location informed that only one family was renting the building before the issue went viral.

Hussein, 31, who works as a house builder, said he used to live in the building between 2018 and 2020, paying a monthly rent of RM500.

“In 2020, officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Hulu Langat District Council ordered us to move out,” he said. — Bernama
