KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — The Immigration Department has urged the public not to use photographs generated or altered using artificial intelligence (AI) technology when applying for Malaysian passports.
In a Facebook post, the department said the use of AI-generated images or the submission of false information in passport applications was a serious offence that could lead to action under the Passport Act 1966 (Act 150).
Applicants were reminded to ensure the photographs submitted are original, clear and compliant with specifications set by the immigration authorities.
“Any false photo or information submitted may result in the application being rejected, and the applicant may face action under existing legal provisions,” the department said.
It also reminded the public to ensure passport photographs have even lighting, a clear view of the face without shadows, and are not altered using applications or AI technology.
The department added that the use of genuine photographs was crucial to ensure smooth identity verification and prevent fraud.
