KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — The Immigration Department today confirmed that one of its vehicles was involved in a fatal road accident along Jalan Sultan Ismail here early this morning.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the department would give its full cooperation to the police in determining the cause of the accident.
“The department respects the ongoing investigation process and will not make any conclusions that could pre-empt the findings of the authorities,” he said.
Zakaria said the department would also conduct an internal investigation into compliance with standard operating procedures and safety aspects involving the operation of department vehicles to ensure the matter was thoroughly examined.
He urged those with information about the incident to assist the authorities, while asking the public to respect the privacy and sensitivities of the victims’ families and refrain from sharing unverified images, recordings or information.
Zakaria said the department viewed the incident seriously and would take appropriate action based on the findings of the police investigation and its internal probe.
The department also expressed its condolences and sympathy to the victims’ families and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.
