KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — Former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob left the court complex here today after his son paid the RM300,000 bail imposed on him.
The 66-year-old Bera MP declined to comment on the charges against him, instead leaving the matter to his legal team led by Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, Berita Harian reported.
Asked about his health, Ismail Sabri replied: “Yes.”
He then shook hands and greeted supporters who had travelled from Bera to show their support.
The supporters waited outside the court complex lobby for more than two hours.
Also seen were former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and former Pahang menteri besar Tan Sri Adnan Yaakob.
Ismail Sabri was then escorted by supporters as he made his way to his vehicle.
A supporter who wished to be known as Rohaina said she was relieved to see Ismail Sabri in good health after the former prime minister experienced health problems several weeks ago.
“I am relieved to see that he has recovered but sad that he has to face charges in court. I hope he will be acquitted of the charges,” she said.
Declare assets under Section 36(2) of MACC Act
Earlier, Sessions Court judge Suzana Hussin allowed Ismail Sabri to be released on RM300,000 bail with one surety after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to comply with a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) notice.
The notice required him to declare his assets under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009.
However, Suzana rejected the prosecution’s application for Ismail Sabri to surrender his passport as there was no evidence to suggest he was likely to flee the country.
Ismail Sabri arrived at the court complex at about 8.35am with his wife Datin Seri Muhaini Zainal Abidin and children, including singer Dafi, before being joined by supporters and other family members.
He appeared calm in the public gallery as he chatted with his siblings and supporters.
Khairy, Adnan and former Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun were also present for the proceedings.
The public gallery was filled with journalists and security personnel, while only individuals with valid court passes were allowed entry.
Ismail Sabri, dressed in a black suit, entered the dock at 9.38am before Suzana ordered the charge to be read to him.
He appeared calm as he indicated that he understood the charge and elected to stand trial.
The charge was also displayed on a television screen in the courtroom, where Ismail Sabri read and examined the details, including the foreign currencies allegedly involved.
After the proceedings, supporters approached Ismail Sabri to offer words of encouragement before he was taken to a temporary holding room next to the courtroom.
Meanwhile, his son, accompanied by lawyer Datuk Seri Rajan Navaratnam, went to the bail payment counter to settle the amount.
Pacemaker fitted
Meanwhile, Amer Hamzah said his client was recovering well after undergoing a pacemaker implantation procedure at the National Heart Institute (IJN) and was scheduled for a follow-up examination.
“I am relieved that nothing bad happened today. Let us continue to pray for his health,” he said.
Asked about Ismail Sabri’s feelings over the charges against him, Amer Hamzah said: “No one likes being charged, especially when you believe the charges are baseless and have strong grounds.”
