JOHOR BAHRU, July 7 — Despite their busy campaign schedule ahead of polling day this Saturday, Johor state election candidates took time to observe the early voting process for security personnel today.
Among those present at early voting centres were all three candidates for the Layang-Layang seat, namely Guna Balakrishnan of Pakatan Harapan (PH), Chua Jian Boon of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Abd Mutalip Abd Rahim of Perikatan Nasional (PN), who turned up at the 5th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) Camp in Simpang Renggam.
All three candidates for the Tenggaroh seat — Muhamad Amerul Muhamad (PN), Mohd Youzaimi Yusof (BN) and Md Yusof Dawam (PH) — also did likewise, at the Iskandar Camp early voting centre in Mersing.
The oldest candidate in the Johor polls, Lim Chin Eng (PN), was also present to observe the early voting process at the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK), while PH candidate for the Kempas seat Muhammad Faezuddin Mohd Puad was at the Kempas Police Station, and BN candidate for the Bukit Permai seat Datuk Jafni Md Shukor was at the Kulai District Police Headquarters.
Besides candidates, top military and security officers also visited early voting centres, including Army Chief General Tan Sri Azhan Md Othman together with 21st Special Service Group (21 GGK) commander Major General Datuk Ahmad Shuhaimi Mat Wajab at Iskandar Camp, Mersing.
Meanwhile, Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad cast his vote at Dewan Dato Onn, Johor IPK.
Bernama checks showed that eligible security personnel turned up to fulfil their voting responsibilities in an orderly manner, adhering to procedures set by Election Commission officers, from as early as 8am.
Although rain fell briefly at several locations, it did not disrupt the smooth arrival of security personnel, who came in stages to carry out their responsibilities.
A total of 20,607 voters, comprising 8,544 members of the Malaysian Armed Forces and their spouses as well as 12,063 police personnel and their spouses were registered for early voting.
A total of 64 early voting centres opened at 8 am and will close in stages between noon and 6pm, depending on the location and the number of registered voters.
A total of 172 candidates are vying for the 56 seats in the Johor State Legislative Assembly. — Bernama
