JOHOR BAHRU, May 19 — The Johor Media Club (KMJ) has lodged a police report over the alleged aggressive conduct by security personnel against media practitioners covering the 2026 Pakatan Harapan (PH) Convention here on Sunday.
KMJ said the report lodged at the Johor Bahru Sentral police station earlier was a proactive step following to the alleged incident involving journalists from Johor and Kuala Lumpur.
The club said the security personnel were said to have obstructed media practitioners who were present at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here to cover the political convention.
“The situation involved physical and verbal altercations while the media practitioners were carrying out their tasks.
“The uncontrolled situation obstructed the media personnel’s work and also their safety while carrying out their professional responsibilities,” read a statement issued by KMJ today.
The statement added the situation had raised safety concerns among media practitioners who were carrying out their professional duties.
“The incident should not have happened, especially after assurances were earlier given by the organisers that proper access would be provided to facilitate media operations.
“In this regard, KMJ has taken proactive steps by filing a police report to ensure that such matters do not recur, thus protecting the welfare and rights of media personnel in carrying out their duties,” added the statement.
Following that, national media watchdog movement Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) also expressed its concern over the incident.
On Sunday, PH’s top leadership attended the national convention here. The event was attended by Prime Minster Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and several senior ministers.
