ISKANDAR PUTERI, Oct 31 — A dispute over a loan is believed to have sparked a fight between a group of people outside a supermarket in Taman Pulai Utama, Skudai, which went viral on social media.
Iskandar Puteri district police chief Assistant Commissioner Radin Ramlan Radin Taha said police received a report on the incident at 6.38pm yesterday, Sinar Harian reported.
He said initial investigations found that the fight broke out between two parties who knew each other before it turned physical.
“In the incident, a 35-year-old local man suffered a broken right leg following an incident involving a car driven by one of the individuals involved.
“The victim received treatment at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA), Johor Baru, and is reported to be in stable condition,” he said in a statement today.
Radin Ramlan said police detained three locals, a man and two women aged between 34 and 53, to assist in investigations.
A Proton Saga was also seized, while police are tracking down several others believed to be involved.
“Urine tests on all three suspects came back negative for drugs, and checks found they have no previous criminal records,” he was quoted as saying.
He said the incident was recorded by a member of the public and uploaded to Facebook.
The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
It is also being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine, or up to 20 years if hurt is caused.
Radin Ramlan advised the public not to take the law into their own hands to resolve disputes and to refrain from speculating in ways that could disrupt investigations.
Earlier, a 23-second video went viral showing a man, believed to be a motorcyclist, standing on the road with his leg dangling before a Proton Saga rammed into him.
The victim appeared to try to avoid the car but was still hit.
In the footage, a woman can be heard asking the driver why he had hit her husband, to which the driver replied only “balai” (police station).
