KOTA BHARU, Aug 12 — Malaysia and Thailand are strengthening border security cooperation through government-to-government (G2G) and police-to-police (P2P) platforms, including addressing cross-border crime threats.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the G2G cooperation is implemented through the Malaysia-Thailand Border Security Management Committee, which meets twice a year.

He said that the P2P cooperation involves the states bordering Thailand, namely Perlis, Kedah and Kelantan, to ensure that security aspects are always given attention.

“This police cooperation usually involves three things: intelligence sharing, capacity building, and joint operations, if necessary,” he said.

He said this to reporters after visiting the family of the late Corporal Mohamad Nur Hafiz Rahim at his family’s home in Kampung Hutan Pasir, Ketereh here today. Mohamad Nur Hafiz was believed to have died from an electric shock in Beaufort, Sabah, last Thursday.

Saifuddin Nasution also said that border security issues were also discussed in the recent official meeting with his Thai counterpart, including during the visit of Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to Malaysia.

“The management of this border area is very sensitive because it involves the sovereignty of two countries, the movement of people, and elements of cross-border crime. All of them are on our radar.

“We do not resolve it through back-and-forth media statements, but rather through appropriate platforms and forums in an orderly manner as neighbouring countries,” he added. — Bernama
