PETALING JAYA, May 8 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) activated its disaster operations room and emergency hotline following continuous heavy rain and storm conditions today.

In a Facebook statement, MBPJ urged the public to report incidents such as fallen trees, flash floods and other weather-related emergencies through its 24-hour hotline at 03-7957 4113/03-7954 2020.

The move comes after the Malaysian Meteorological Department earlier issued a thunderstorm warning covering the Klang Valley, with heavy rain, strong winds and storm conditions forecast across several states until evening.

The adverse weather has already led to flash floods, fallen trees and traffic congestion in parts of Petaling Jaya and other parts of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

MBPJ said its rapid response teams have been deployed to affected locations while clean-up works are being carried out by waste management contractors.

Separately, the council said it is working with the Drainage and Irrigation Department on long-term flood mitigation measures along Sungai Penchala and Sungai Klang.

The planned upgrades include flood barriers, overflow control systems and improved drainage management to reduce the impact of recurring flash floods.
