Melaka assures treated water safe after suspected human remains found at Durian Tunggal Dam reserve

MELAKA, Sept 14 — The Melaka State Government has given an assurance that the safety of raw water sources and treated supply remains a top priority after suspected human remains were found in the Durian Tunggal Dam reserve yesterday.

Melaka State Secretary Datuk Salhah Salleh said that, based on quality monitoring so far, no parameter breaches have been detected and the treated water remains safe.

“The state government understands the public’s concern, especially since the discovery site is part of the catchment area and source for Melaka’s water supply,” she said in a statement here tonight.

She added that water undergoes treatment before distribution to consumers and that quality is monitored and tested in accordance with established standards.

Salhah said the state government, through relevant agencies, will increase water quality monitoring and inspections in the affected area, including sampling and testing.

“The state government will continue to cooperate with the police and relevant technical agencies to ensure every aspect of the discovery receives appropriate attention within their jurisdictions,” she said.

Salhah added that the discovery of suspected human remains at the dam reserve should not be seen as contamination or a threat to the water supply’s safety.

She said conclusions must be based on results from monitoring, sampling, and technical evaluations by the authorities.

She advised the public not to panic, jump to conclusions, or spread unverified information about water safety, the victim’s identity, or the cause of the incident.

“The state government gives an assurance that the safety of water sources and the people’s interests will always be prioritised, and a precautionary approach will continue to ensure public confidence in the water supply’s safety,” she said. — Bernama
