MetMalaysia: Malaysia could see temperatures hit 40°C from January to May 2027

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — Malaysia could experience extreme heat and dry weather from January to May next year, with temperatures in some areas potentially reaching 40°C as a very strong El Nino, or Super El Nino, is expected to develop towards the end of this year.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the likelihood of the phenomenon occurring was now approaching 100 per cent, based on climate model forecasts from international observation and research centres, according to a report published by Berita Harian.

He said past meteorological records showed that very strong El Nino episodes were often associated with higher temperatures, dry weather and a serious risk of haze, similar to conditions currently affecting the country.

“Experience from the Super El Nino episodes of 1997/1998 and 2015/2016 showed that the country’s daily maximum temperatures at the time were more extreme than during other periods.

“The country recorded its highest temperature of 40.1°C at the Chuping Meteorological Station in Perlis on April 9, 1998, and 39.3°C at the Batu Embun Meteorological Station in Jerantut, Pahang on April 10, 2016,” he said.

Mohd Hisham said there was about a 70 per cent probability that the intensity of the current El Nino would exceed the strength of any El Nino episode recorded since 1950.

“The situation could cause northern and inland areas of the peninsula, as well as inland Sabah and Sarawak, to record higher-than-usual temperatures and increase the risk of hot weather and heatwaves from the end of the North-east Monsoon in January until May 2027.

“Based on the latest projections, more meteorological stations in the northern peninsula could record temperatures of up to 40°C during the peak of the hot season between January and May 2027,” he said.

He warned that rising temperatures and prolonged hot weather could increase the risk of heatwaves and affect health, particularly among children, the elderly and those engaging in outdoor activities.

“Reduced rainfall and longer dry periods could put pressure on water resources, including catchment areas and dams, while also affecting agriculture and other industries sensitive to water shortages.

“Prolonged hot and dry conditions would also make vegetation more susceptible to fires, increasing the risk of forest and peatland fires as well as haze, both locally and across borders,” he said.
