KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 — A motorcyclist was killed and another seriously injured when a trailer struck them as they sheltered from rain under a flyover at Kilometre 96.2 of the North-South Expressway near Sungai Petani early this morning.

Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said the two men, both 23 and from the same village, had stopped under the flyover to escape the rain, according to a Berita Harian report.

“When trying to avoid another motorcycle that had stopped to take shelter under the flyover, both Yamaha Y15ZR machines brushed against each other before scraping the side of the trailer in the same lane,” he said in a statement.

The trailer then ran over and dragged both riders, killing Mohd Khairul A’zami Mohd Nazeri of Kampung Permatang Kong, Mukim Padang Hang, Alor Setar, at the scene.

His companion is receiving treatment at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital.

The two were travelling in the left lane from Alor Setar towards Sungai Petani when they stopped at the location.

The 40-year-old trailer driver from Bayan Lepas, Penang, was not injured and tested negative for drugs in an initial screening.

The body was taken to the hospital’s forensic department for a post-mortem.

Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
