KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — The Economy Ministry is looking at ways to make salary offers more transparent and equitable, rather than setting an absolute wage target.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said wage growth was important to ensure the benefits of economic growth were felt by the people.
“Median wages are around RM3,600, but there is still a gap, particularly among the Bumiputera,” he told reporters after a dialogue session at the Royale Chulan hotel here.
Akmal said greater transparency was needed in salary offers to ensure workers received fairer returns for their contributions.
“We need greater transparency in wages, and there should be a mandate for salary offers to be made more transparent and fair,” he said, adding that he would bring the matter back to the Economy Ministry for further consideration.
He said equal opportunities for workers could also be reassessed to ensure young people and other workers had better opportunities and received wages commensurate with their contributions.
Akmal stressed that the approach was not about setting a single absolute salary figure, but about ensuring greater openness and fairness in the wages being offered.
He said wages should, as far as possible, meet people’s expenditure needs, with the Perceived Adequacy of Household Expenditure indicator taking into account factors such as location and household size.
“In the context of wages, what we are looking at is greater transparency in salary offers, rather than setting an absolute figure,” he said.
