KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 — The resignation of Nurul Izzah Anwar from her party leadership post will not affect her commitment to PKR, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said today.
Fahmi said Nurul Izzah remained a party member and would continue to support its struggle, while stressing that component parties remained committed to supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“Puan Nur Izzah remains as a member of the party and will continue to support the party in the struggle.
“The focus of Parliament and the commitment of the MPs in Parliament is that they will continue to support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim until the end.”
He said Nurul Izzah had resigned and requested time to focus on her PhD studies, with the party’s leadership responsibilities to continue under its existing leadership structure.
Fahmi said the resignation should not be interpreted as an indication that the government was losing support, stressing that political parties did not automatically leave the government following such developments.
“We are not like the other parties that have said that the parties have automatically left the government. That is not the case. We are not like that.
“In a democracy, we sit down, we discuss. The higher objective is to solve the problems of the people, the economy, and make sure the economy of the people becomes the focus.”
He said the government remained focused on reforms and resolving outstanding issues, including matters arising from the Tabung Haji-related Royal Commission of Inquiry report.
Fahmi said 75 per cent of the recommendations in the report had been implemented, although several issues remained to be addressed.
“The government will continue to implement many reforms that need to be carried out,” he said.
Asked whether recent developments could affect the government, Fahmi said the public should not underestimate the situation, while expressing confidence that Anwar would make further announcements benefiting the people.
“I believe that in the near future, the Prime Minister will make some good announcements for the people and the government,” he said.
On the next general election, Fahmi said it could be held towards the end of next year, while declining to comment further on speculation surrounding its timing.
He was speaking to reporters after officiating the Internet Selamat forum with parent-teacher associations (PIBG) at Imbi Hall in Cheras today.
Nurul Izzah announced that she was relinquishing her role as PKR deputy president to focus on further studies and community work outside politics. Instead of a full resignation, the PKR Central Leadership Council granted her temporary leave starting after the upcoming National Congress, with Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stepping in to handle her duties.
